  • STONINGTON

    Stonington

Stonington is the easternmost shoreline town in Connecticut, bordered by the Pawcatuck River, the Mystic River on the west, and Long Island Sound to the south. It borders Westerly and Watch Hill, Rhode Island.

Stonington Village (also known as the Borough), is a charming old fishing village located on a narrow peninsula in Long Island Sound and the Atlantic Ocean. It has a wonderful harbor protected by Fishers Island, NY and breakwaters that were built after the devastating 1938 hurricane. It is an avid sailing and boating community.

Many Borough residents, nicknamed the "Literary Lions" of Stonington, reflect the large community of well-known authors, editors, and poets who reside here. The village is small, and can be traveled entirely on foot. There are many fabulous restaurants, antique shops, and clothing shops in the village. .

They also enjoy one of the best "farmers' markets" in New England, every Saturday near the town docks, where you can buy fresh fish, as well as veggies, fruits, wildflowers, and cheeses from local farms.

At the end of the point, there is a small beach, and the Old Lighthouse Museum.

Greater Stonington consists of Mason's Island, a private, gated shoreline community, half of Mystic, home to the Mystic Seaport Museum and Mystic Aquarium, Wequetequock, an old farming community, and Pawcatuck, on the border with neighboring Westerly, Rhode Island.
